As Promised

Last weekend, I finally got a chance to see Paranormal Activity, which is being hailed “the scariest movie ever.” (or at least the scariest movie of the decade).  Personally, I think it’s pretty ridiculous to make that kind of claim for anything.  Stating an opinion is one thing, but saying something like “Abbey Road is the best album ever” is profoundly retarded and only inspires people to prove you wrong.  That being said, Paranormal Activity was one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen.

In case you are unaware of the plot, here it is.  A woman, claiming to have had supernatural experiences since childhood, and her skeptical boyfriend decide to set up a camera in their bedroom to capture any “paranormal activity” that may arise throughout the night (The couple’s camera is the only view offered throughout the entire film, a la Blair Witch).  As the movie progresses the occurrences intensify and the odds of you shitting your pants heighten.  I realize the plot probably sounds quite un-scary but trust me, it is quite terrifying.  The fact that most of scares come while the couple is sleeping combined with the sense of reality and snuff-horror style of filming will have you feeling about as uncomfortable as you ever have in a theater.

Outside of the last three seconds of this film, I thought it was damn near perfect.  And even those final sullied moments didn’t manage to ruin the rest of the movie for me.  I highly recommend checking this one out while it’s still in theaters.  There’s probably only 2 or 3 times a year that I will tell someone that it’s totally worth it to drop $9 on seeing a movie.  This is one of those times.
